What is a Feed?
March 28, 2008 by Guru, under Randomness, Reviews.
This entry is specially for Abhi, and for others who do not know what a feed means and how it can be used. In the simplest terms, it is only used to get updates. What this means? Let’s say you love a particular web site and want to read what latest stuff has been published (only if the platform used supports feeds). A feed will allow you to have these latest contents directly without going to the URL. That means, you can have a common pool where you have all the updates of your favourite sites to “feed” on. The feeds can be in two formats Atom and RSS… (more…)
Don't want to lose another post? Here is your chance. Grab our feed to have contents delivered direct to your browser.

Mauritian DNS Servers! DIE!
March 28, 2008 by InF, under General.
Arghhh! I hate those things! Mauritian ones are not reliable! I’ve been trying to access GeekScribes since this morning, and I kept getting a 404 Error! My international friends could easily access. The server responded when I pinged. So what was the issue? My connection was good, so it meant one thing. The DNS servers in Mauritius were fc*in with me!
That was the last time I’m suffering through those servers. I had considered the alternative for a long long time, and now I finally accepted it, and moved to it. If you are like me, and getting loads of frequent 404 errors while using the local DNS Servers, use this method. What was this alternative? OpenDNS.

Review: Logitech X-540 vs Creative M5300
March 27, 2008 by InF, under Reviews.

When I was looking to buy my first 5.1 channels speaker system, I considered those 2 models primarily. At that time, the Logitech X-540 was not yet available in Mauritius, and I had to opt for the Creative Inspire M5300 which was priced Rs.2700 (~$90). Well, for this review I’m not going to bother you with figures and whatnot. I’ll just tell you about my testing results. For both setups, I placed the 2 back speakers on a wall behind me, the front and centre speakers were on my desk in front. The speakers are powered by a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy SE 5.1 capable soundcard.

Wordpress vs B2Evolution
March 27, 2008 by InF, under Featured, Reviews.
While setting up GeekScribes, we explored a number of blogging platforms on which we could base our site. We tried B2Evolution, Serendipity and finally Wordpress. I wanted to stay away from Wordpress because of its reputation for attracting spammers. So we installed both Serendipity and B2Evolution. Here’s the review!

Firefox 3 Prowls, the Blue E Shudders!
March 26, 2008 by InF, under Tech News.
Firefox 3 is about to be released from Beta (it’s STILL in Beta), and will soon be available for grabs by the general public, with an estimated final version release date of June 2008.
Firefox 3 boasts about increased stability, much less memory consumption, a better user interface, more personalisation and my personal guess, revamped security.
Firefox users do know that the fox is a hungry b*****d that eats memory. You’ll usually see FFox eating as much as 110MB in your task manager, after you have around 5-6 tabs open, and having browsed for around 2 hours. Add in some add-ons and it’ll even climb further. It takes as much memory as those year 1999 “high-end” PC games!
But what I do know is that, seeing the success FFox has enjoyed since now, I predict a massive download rush in June. I dunno yet what IE has in stock, but it better take out the big guns to counter the Firefox 3 wave that’s about to take over the Internets! ![]()
Remember? Firefox got 5.6 million downloads in the first 2 weeks, and has topped the 25 million downloads mark just after?
Downloads of Firefox 1.0 had reached 25.24 million as of Friday, just over 100 days since its release, according to the Mozilla Foundation, developers of the browser. A preview release of Firefox 1.1 is scheduled for April.

Well, the browser wars just turned a lot lot hotter! ![]()
OMFG! I just found out that Firefox tops 500 millions download mark! WTF! Source!!

A Simple Laptop Buying Guide
March 26, 2008 by InF, under Featured, General.
[26/03/08]

I saw a post somewhere the other day about people wanting to know what to look for in a laptop before they buy one. This inspired me to write a short guide on what you should pay attention to when looking for a laptop.
The problem with such guides is that they never remain relevant for very long considering how fast the field evolves. So I tagged the date in Bold. If it has been more than 6 months after this tag date, consider this article semi irrelevant. If it’s been more than a year from the tag date, completely ignore it! ![]()
Anyways here goes. Laptops are more and more common nowadays. People usually prefer laptops to desktops because of their mobility and in-built battery. This means you can have a portable computer and an in-built UPS at the same time. In the past, the price was quite prohibitive, and well, performance was not one of the best. Nowadays, you can even find gaming-grade laptops, but these are not usually sold for less than $1000. So here’s a set of questions you need to ask when buying your lappy!
