DRobo - The storage robot

May 30, 2008 by Guru, under Gadget.

We are all worried about our data. Being able to keep them secure is a big question mark. We don’t know when our hard disks will crash. We may have heard of the famous “RAID” (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks). Taking the RAID approach, our data is either spread in many disks or mirrored across them. Thus, ideally nothing will ever be lost. :D This is just the basic of the idea behind RAID. There are further extension to it. with a combination of the levels of raid for better suiting the situation. The more we think of security, usability, flexibility and for the long run, the more money we spend. In fact, you must be knowledgeable to configure your “RAID”. What if I say there is an easier solution? Yes, there exists one; DRobo.

Hotmail Spam. I HATE Spam!

May 29, 2008 by InF, under Annoyances.

After being absent for 3 days, I check my Hotmail inbox, and what do I see? SPAM!

SpamHotmail

My usually clean inbox is filled with 34 NEW spam mails, coming somewhere from here: “explorerscomputerjm”

I googled the address, and found a domain “explorerscomputerjm.com”.

But then, while opening some of the spam mails*, one of the people said:

Guys, this email turned up in my inbox earlier. Not sure where it started but all I know is that by responding to it and asking to be removed from the mailing list it appears to be spreading like wildfire. If you get this email please DO NOT press the reply button. I suspect that if you do it will just keep replicating itself in everyone’s mailbox, even though their email address does not appear in the list of recipients.

*Yes, I know I shouldn’t open spam mails, specially those with attachments. I was extra careful. :)

I use this hotmail address sparingly, and I do not know from where all the spam is coming from. I’m suspecting something involved with Windows Live Messenger. Possibly a virus or spyware. I’m currently running an antivirus scan, and an anti-spyware scan. Results pending. I’ll update this post soon.

I’m going to follow my own advice about spam mails, that is to never reply to one. Let’s see what happens. I definitely HATE spam! :/

Updates: Good luck for me! There was actually no spyware or virus on my machine. The spam mails stopped. I didn’t get anything new, from the time I took the shot. I still don’t know how the spammers got my email.

Ergonomic - Our Health has a Price

May 27, 2008 by Guru, under General, Randomness.

We all want to be healthy. The well known quote will say “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” and some would say “practice sports”. Each and every being has their one definition of being healthy. But, when it concerns your little computer, we all speak the same language. That of ergonomics. (more…)

Orange FAQ Updated: More details on FUP?

May 23, 2008 by InF, under IT, Mauritius, News.

It seems I’m always late with catching up the latest news updates! :(

Anyways, according to TheMediaGuru, the Orange FAQ, particularly the sections on FUP (Fair Usage Policy) have been updated. They can be accessed here. Bear with me for the long analysis. This will probably be the last FUP article for a while, since I’m kind of tired about writing on the same subject over and over, specially when we are dealing with unreasonable limits, and unfair practices.

Music Recognition on PC for FREE with Tunatic!

May 23, 2008 by InF, under Software.

Fans of Sony Ericsson can surely boast about their TrackID service, which gives you the details of a music track currently being played, like the name of the artist, and the song title. You just have to record a few seconds of music with TrackID, and within seconds, you will automagically have the details of the song.

PC users like me have long searched for a similar application, to identify music currently being played. Sometimes, you hear a track somewhere, and would like to know which band or artist is playing.

Well rejoice, now you can!

Surround Sound on Linux Mint

May 22, 2008 by InF, under Linux.

There is one annoying thing with MP3 files. They are stereo, and not surround compatible. Notice that when you have a 5.1 speaker system (or more), only the 2 front speakers are used to play the music.

I’ve got a Sound Blaster Audigy sound card running on my PC, and luckily it offers CMSS (Creative MultiSpeaker Surround) which allows me to duplicate my front channels music to all other speakers, creating a fake surround effect. It’s not really Dolby-like effects, but hey, it’s still better than having only 2 speakers playing my music.

What I really wanted was to have the same effect, but under Linux Mint, since I’m an avid fan of this distro. I thought it was already included somewhere, but alas no. I found that after browsing around in the control panel. The option could not be found.

My only solution was Google, and the answer came quite rapidly, although not from Linux Mint’s site or wiki or forum, but from Gentoo’s. At least it works, and it was very easy to implement. Read on…

Orange FUP in News on Sunday!

May 18, 2008 by InF, under IT, Mauritius, News.

Finally, the issues about FUP have hit the local newspapers! Guru just sent me a scan of the article, and here it is, for you to feast on!

This article brought me out of my temporary blogging hibernation (due to exam), but had to blog on it! I couldn’t resist! I must thank News On Sunday for publishing the article and Yannick Rivet for reading Mauritian blogs, and considering our opinions. At least, we now know that Mauritian bloggers are being taken seriously!

OrangeFUP Newspaper

Btw… Congrats CarrotMadMan! Your title (Stab in the back) goes to print! :D

Here is Mr. Avinash Meetoo’s heavily commented and discussed post about FUP. I’m really sorry since I forgot mentioning this great article.

Animal Cruelty: MercyForAnimals Exposes Egg Industry

May 14, 2008 by InF, under General.

For once I’ll be posting something completely unrelated to technology, but which according to me, you readers need to see.

It’s a video, from MercyForAnimals website, that was shot undercover. It depicts the inhuman and monstrous treatment that laying hens get when eggs are mass-produced.

I’m posting this article, after I saw the video in one of my feeds, and thought I might help propagate the message.

I warn you. Faint of heart and stomach, refrain from going to the link below.

Here’s the link: http://www.mercyforanimals.org/caeggs/

And the follow-up by the company, which is not very convincing
