The Mauritian Blog Brethren – The Story Behind?

by
Guru

Did I spell wrong or is it everything is wrong? For a very long period of time, the SysOp and maintainers of thembb has not been active. Of all the day, today I decided to looks for some inspiration from fellow bloggers to write an article and boom. What did I saw?

  1. thembb.com
  2. thembb

  3. thembb.blogspot.com
  4. thembb

This definitely make me hint at account takeover. Anyone else noticed this?

I tried a whois on the domain name and got the nameservers:

    NS1.SEOBUMMER.COM

    NS2.SEOBUMMER.COM

Must be a weak password or what?

The lesson, don’t use weak password andΒ  change your password frequently

  • No, I think they didn’t renew the domain name… πŸ™‚

  • Looks like it. Yet, we should have been able to access http://www.thembb.blogspot.com

You had such a bad experience. πŸ˜€

  • It’s closed. They sent a newsletter some months back. πŸ˜€

  • 1st.
You guys were never active on MBB. So why care now?

    2nd.
It’s “today I decided to look for” and not “today I decided to looks for”.

    3rd.

You have a geek blog. You should know about absolute vs relative links.

    4th.
“Must be a weak password or what? The lesson, don’t use weak password and change your password frequently”.
Carrotmadman already answered that. If you want the full story, the domain was offered by someone in France and the domain was not renewed the next year.

  • 1) I did not participate actively in the forum. That does not means that I never read their weblog. Right?
    2) It is permissible to make grammatical errors from time to time. Is there any rules condemning this? (Jon La Joie – “I am from the internet, there exists no rules”)
    3) This was a quick post, if I happen to leave some errors. Don’t yell. Just point it out, I will correct. What is it about being a geek? Look like, “Geeks are meant to be perfect”.
    4) If I missed the newsletter so what? Today, I learned about its closure. Have you not noticed themediaguru did not know about the shutdown? Weird? He was an active member
    5) FACT: I did asked on twitter some time back why there were no echoes from thembb.
    6) Thanks Morinn for politely rectifying me. πŸ˜€

  • “Geeks are meant to be perfect”

Never said that. I pointed out that you had a wrong URL on your blog post. I just found it funny.

“Have you not noticed themediaguru did not know about the shutdown? Weird? He was an active member”

What do you mean by he did not know? He just explained that the domain was not renewed.

Look I don’t have the free time to argue with you. I simply do not agree with you about the weak password thing. The domain was not renewed, end of story.

Ohhh Flame war! While I was away doing stuff for GS. No fair! πŸ™

I am/was not much into MBB. Didn’t have much time to participate actively. I followed some discussions on the forum for a while though. I do know Carrot was active there, as was Shah, Jevin, Morinn and the rest of the crew.

By the way, since this is not my article, I won’t make comments on the contents or the issues in. I’ll leave that to the author. Only thing I might say is that the title is not appropriate. Not much of a “story behind” in here, more of an observation. No background info was given on MBB so no story behind.

And I don’t think it has anything to do with a weak passwords here. The domain may not have been renewed, and the blog could have changed hands on Blogspot. Doesn’t indicate any hacking attempt, as far as I know. In any case, cracking passwords by sheer brute-force is tough. Even guessing is somewhat tough.

But do resume! Argue!! I like spectating flame wars! πŸ˜€

  • I did not implied brute force attempt to obtain password. It could have been password compromise leading to account takeover. That was one option.

As far as i knew, I did not knew about the newletter stuffs. So I tried to find a possible answer.

Why the story behind? Have you noticed the question mark? I wanted you people to comment and tell me what has happened. Right?

  • “The lesson, don’t use weak password and change your password frequently”

The lesson, in this case, is not to jump to conclusions too quickly or you might look totally dumb! πŸ˜€

Perhaps you did not subscribe to the newsletter. Why are you making such a fuss when the brethren has been closed quite a while ago? I don’t understand…

    [Absolutely pointless comment to follow]

    *Cheering* Flame war! Flame war!!

  • @Inf: Brute force is old. Right now at this particular second if you imagine how many FOOLS are falling prey to social engineering traps.

Phishing is the most effective method πŸ˜› Well I am in no way telling anyone to do it…just pointing the most effective and simple tool of the moment….

@Morinn: I don’t think the guy can be labeled as dumb just because he made a conclusion so quickly. Don’t jump to conclusion too fast you too πŸ˜›

@Jevin: About the grammatical mistake you pointed out above for the author… Come on… This is a blog…not a newspaper editorial πŸ˜› These natural mistakes which make a blog more REAL to read than reading a news site managed by a company you. Even top bloggers like Daniel of dbt…Darren of problogger make such mistakes often. Yet they are the best πŸ˜‰

    @INF: Yay! Flame lol…thats what’s fun πŸ˜›

  • @ Kurt Avish, I really don’t think I need your holier than thou attitude.

  • InF

@Kurt: Brute force is indeed old, and easily noticeable nowadays. Like, you can’t try more than 3 passwords before getting locked out of an account on most services.

Phishing is very effective, but only against people who are not careful. There are ways to detect a phishing attack, if you are vigilant enough.

There are even more powerful attacks to get accounts, but it’s not a security post, is it?

About MBB, I don’t see why we are fighting here about a dead site. In fact, we had an idea about something like MBB, but it’s still just a concept. I’ll write a post about it soon maybe.

  • @ Inf, will be waiting for the post! πŸ˜‰

And I’m willing to raise the white flag of peace with Neelesh.

After all it was just some flaming on a post, nothing personal, I found it quite fun. :p

Have a great weekend all of you.

  • The weekend is already here.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

  • InF

Flame wars are fun from time to time…

  • Oh yea .. nice article !! lolz.. i found that the other day too ..
I was wondering might be i am not in that closed circle of special bloggers who are allowed to go to thembb .. and now founding this out .. thanks for blogging it .. πŸ™‚

  • At least. It has been informative for someone.
